2003-03-18 - 10:39 pm John Hartman, a visiting artist at the school, gave a really inspiring lecture this morning. Even came up to our studio to chat with us for an hour. He was looking at the work we had up on the wall and he made a specific comment about my drawing. "Who did the sewing machine?" "I did." "It's great. Do you do all your drawings like that?" "Recently, yes." I know it wasn't much but to have an established artist other than my instructor comment on my work makes me giddy. I love hearing from visiting artists, getting to know them and their works. It's also really encouraging to see real artists making it in the art world. And even better that they don't sugarcoat their chosen profession as something oh-so-glamourous that doesn't require struggle or work. He has a show at the Paul Kuhn Gallery that opened just last week and I'm definitely going to drop by. I'd love to see his work up close, inspect every brush stroke and every glob of paint. As a matter of fact I think I may just make a day out of it and go to the AGC too. That will be a Thursday adventure. Yea, today has been a great day for winding down and getting my head back in order after the stressful weekend of curatorial group projects and little sleep. After listening to President Bush's speech last night I've been this wound up ball of frustration and uncertainty. This morning we spent the first hour and a half of class discussing his speech, war, and post-war consequences. Sure, it was a little early to be talking about politics, especially before most people had any coffee, but it was great to talk about everything, to get it all out. I think everyone felt better afterward, lighter. In the afternoon we watched a French foreign film, Artemisia. It was a great way to spend the afternoon because I really could not have handled a long pose figure drawing. Though it was a bit awkward watching such explicity sex scenes in school, I had to shake my feet in order to keep from giggling. Anyhow, I'm taking tonight to relax. Collect my head before I return to a heavy work week. American Idol and some strawberries, working on my zine and finishing a knit headband for Summer. Finishing off the night with a long bath and Conan O'Brien. Yea. It will be good.
